Liferafts come in various shapes and forms depending on the requirements. Over the last few years there have been some pretty impressive advances in the design and construction of liferafts. There are now several new types of self-righting liferafts available. When looking to purchase a liferaft you should consider how many crew are likely to need to use the liferaft should you abandon ship. The main consideration is that you do not want to under occupy a liferaft with persons as this can mean in big seas the liferaft can be prone to flipping over. If you are likely to have 5 people on your boat a 4 man liferaft is better than a 6 man liferaft. Liferafts are also packed in to two different types of storage, a valise and a canister. Valise liferafts are basically like a heavy duty holdalls which are a bit smaller and lighter than canisters. A canister liferaft is made from a heavy-duty plastic container and the liferaft would normally be stored on deck in a cradle.
