Base layer clothing, when combined with the mid layer, is designed to keep your body temperature at a comfortable level to allow you to operate effectively in all conditions. One of the main purposes of base layer garments is to keep perspiration to a minimum. Wicking is a key process in achieving this; ‘wicking fabric’ describes material which draws sweat away from the skin, thus keeping you warm, dry and comfortable. Modern polyester and microfibre materials are ideal as they transfer moisture away from the body rather than absorbing it.
