Removing bilge water is an essential process in maintaining a safe and hygienic sailing environment, so a bilge pump is an important piece of equipment and it may be sensible to keep a backup pump on board just in case. As bilge may contain fuel, electric bilge pumps are designed not to create sparks, and many are fitted with float switches to turn the pump on when the water reaches a set level.
